A Brief Overview Of CSS

by Mike on July 25, 2010

Just about any gamer knows what Half Life and Counter Strike is. Not just the old engine, but the new source engine. Its become just about a house hold game for gameservers like Quake and Doom were in the 90s.

Counter-Strike Source in the beginning

Counter Strike rolled off the development line way back in June 1999 as a mod to Half Life. In 2000, Valve chose to retail the mod. The game had 19 beta releases until version 1 was made available. After all that, there followed 7 big updates to the game, the upgrade from version 1.5 to 1.6 being the biggest.

Introducing STEAM servers

A large group of people believed the 1.6 ruined Counterstrike. Hardcore players still play 1.5, even though WON has been long dead. Although some would argue the only ones playing on these illegal game servers are those that dont want to buy a legtimate copy of the game. 1.6 allowed modders to add maps, sounds etc. There is still a large active community of developers supporting this game after 10 years! This shows exactly how popular Counterstrike Source game server rental still remains.

Counterstrike Conditions Zero servers were released shortly after in 2004. The game was essentially a facelift that allowed you to run bots single player. This was a modified version of the Quake II engine it didnt do very well selling only 2.9 million copies from December 2009 as opposed to 4.2 million during the same period.

Introducing source game servers

Back in 2004 when Valve brough out Half Life 2, they also released a new up to date version of the game called Counter Strike Source, or CSS for short. This version now had the same level of graphics of other games for its age and so was making older PCs struggle to run the game. Half Life Episode One, also brought a new release to the Source Engine in 2006. It took a while for people to get into CSS, as a high powered PC was needed. However for most, once played CSS, they never stopped. New maps, mods etc were brought alone with Counterstrike Source.

Hax, cheaters and Counterstike Servers

Every single version of Counterstrike has been hampered with cheaters on CSS game servers. VAC is a popular deterrant, however its not the best anticheat. Thus there are groups like Steam Bans that work better as this is ban submissions by real people. By far the best deterrent has to be a good server admin on the clan server itself. Although its difficult to always make sure a game server has an admin online. Which is why we have recently seen a lot of scripts that automatically kick and ban hackers.

As we write this, we arent quite sure on the history of Counterstrike. The Battlefield series and COD games have taken a lot of players away from CSS.

What comes next is down to Valve
