Coming up with a list of the top 10 best sci-fi films of all time was definitely a challenge. There are so many classic sci-fi films/movies out there that even narrowing it down to just 10 was tough.

1. Blade Runner (1982) Dir: Ridley Scott

Whether you prefer the original theatrical version (with a bored-sounding narration and without the famed unicorn scenes) or the director’s cut of a few years later (sans narration and unicorn duly re-inserted), Blade Runner was the runaway favourite in our poll.

The story revolves around Harrison Ford’s policeman, Rick Deckard, and his hunt for four cloned humanoids, known as replicants, in a dystopian version of Los Angeles. Replicants have been deemed illegal and Deckard is a blade runner, a specialist in exterminating them.

The film is loosely based on Philip K Dick’s short story, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? “Blade Runner is the best movie ever made,” says Stephen Minger, stem cell biologist at King’s College London. “It was so far ahead of its time and the whole premise of the story – what is it to be human and who are we, where we come from? It’s the age-old questions.”

It also discusses consciousness with an attempt to formulate a way to tell a human from a machine. The Voight-Kampff empathy test is used by the police in the film to identify the replicants – who have memories implanted and are programmed with artificial emotions. “The Voight-Kampff empathy test is not far away from the sort of thing that cognitive neuroscientists are actually doing today,” says Chris Frith of the Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience at University College, London.

Debates rage on whether Deckard himself is a replicant. Ridley Scott says that he is artificial, but Harrison Ford argues that during filming Scott told him Deckard was human. Whatever the answer, it is a worthy winner also because of the quality of the film-making: Vangelis’ brooding score, Rutger Hauer’s replicant’s seminal “I’ve seen things…” speech and that shot of the future LA cityscape, which kicks off the story.

2. 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) Dir: Stanley Kubrick

The monoliths have been watching us. They gave humankind the evolutionary kick in the pants it needed to survive at the Dawn of Time. In 1999, humankind discovered a second monolith on the moon. Now, in the year 2001, the S.S. Discovery and its crew, Captains Dave Bowman and Frank Poole, and their onboard computer, HAL 9000, must discover what alien force is watching Earth….

3. Star Wars (1977)/Empire Strikes Back (1980)

After receiving a vision from Obi-Wan Kenobi and fleeing the ice world of Hoth with his friends after an Imperial attack, Luke Skywalker travels to the marsh planet of Dagobah, where he is instructed in the ways of the Force by the legendary Jedi master Yoda. Meanwhile, Han Solo and Princess Leia make their way to planet Bespin, where they are greeted by Han’s old friend, a shifty gambler named Lando Calrissian. Ambushed by the Empire shortly after their arrival, Han and his friends are imprisoned by Darth Vader. Luke leaves Dagobah to rescue his friends, and is met by Vader and a startling revelation.

4. Alien (1979) Dir: Ridley Scott

The crew of the deep space mining ship Nostromo are awaken from hypersleep to investigate a strange signal from a nearby planet. While investigating the signal, they discover it was intended as a warning, and not an SOS. What follows are some grisly and inventive special effects based on the work of H.R.Giger.

5. Solaris (1972) Dir: Andrei Tarkovsky

The Solaris mission has established a base on a planet that appears to host some kind of intelligence, but the details are hazy and very secret. After the mysterious demise of one of the three scientists on the base, the main character is sent out to replace him. He finds the station run-down and the two remaining scientists cold and secretive. When he also encounters his wife who has been dead for seven years, he begins to appreciate the baffling nature of the alien intelligence.

6. Terminator (1984)/T2: Judgment day (1991) Dir: James Cameron

n the future, Skynet, a computer system fights a losing war against the humans who built it and who it nearly exterminated. Just before being destroyed, Skynet sends a Terminator back in time to kill Sarah, the mother to be of John Connor, the Leader of the human resistance. The terminator can pass for human, is nearly indestructible, and has only one mission, killing Sarah Connor. One soldier is sent back to protect her from the killing machine. He must find Sarah before the Terminator can carry out it’s mission.

7. The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) Dir: Robert Wise

An alien (Klaatu) with his mighty robot (Gort) land their spacecraft on Cold War-era Earth just after the end of World War II. They bring an important message to the planet that Klaatu wishes to tell to representatives of all nations. However, communication turns out to be difficult, so, after learning something about the natives, Klaatu decides on an alternative approach.

8. War of the Worlds (1953) Dir: Byron Haskin

The Martians unchain a direct assault to our planet, with hundreds of invulnerable ships. The invasion takes place all over the world, and all the major cities are destroyed one after one; even the atomic bomb can’t stop them. But, if the humans can’t beat them, who can? Maybe something MUCH smaller than them…

9. The Matrix (1999) Dir: Andy & Larry Wachowski

Thomas A. Anderson is a man living two lives. By day he is an average computer programmer and by night a malevolent hacker known as Neo. Neo finds himself targeted by the police when he is contacted by Morpheus, a legendary computer hacker branded a terrorist by the government. 10. Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) Dir: Steven Spielberg

Cableman Roy Neary is one of several people who experience a close encounter of the first kind, witnessing UFOs flying through the night sky. He is subsequently haunted by a mountainlike image in his head and becomes obsessed with discovering what it represents, putting severe strain on his marriage. Meanwhile, government agents around the world have a close encounter of the second kind, discovering physical evidence of otherworldly visitors in the form of military vehicles that went missing decades ago suddenly appearing in the middle of nowhere. Nelson Mandela’s release from prison and his ascent to a democratically elected President of South Africa marks a radical change in the country. This change away from apartheid will not be easy for anyone in the country, but Mandela has to figure out how to galvanize the residents of the country together. Because of his love of the game, Mandela places his support behind the Springboks, the national rugby team. South Africa is hosting the 1995 Rugby World Cup, that being the only reason the Springboks are even competing in the tournament as its years on the sideline of world rugby events has not made it world ranked. The Springboks were previously considered the team of white South Africa, and as such was denounced by Mandela when he was in prison. But he does whatever he can to make it the team of all South Africa. He needs the support of the Springboks and its captain, Francois Pienaar, to achieve his unrealistic goal of the Springboks winning the World Cup, even against such rugby powerhouses the All-Blacks representing New Zealand. Mandela tries to inspire Pienaar to lead by example, much like Mandela has himself. Beyond Mandela’s dream, his racially mixed security team has the added pressure of protecting him at the Springboks’ matches while he places himself in potentially unprotectable situations.

With incredibly well developed characters and great dialogue (”Forgetaboutit!”), Donnie Brasco ranks as one of the best modern gangster movies as well as one of the best undercover cop movies ever made.

1987’s The Untouchables was Brian De Palma’s riff on the novel of the same name by Eliot Ness and Oscar Fraley, first published in 1947; as well as the late ’50s/early ’60s TV series starring Robert Stack and Neville Brand. The movie starred Kevin Costner as Eliot Ness, Sean Connery as Irish beat cop Jim Malone, and Robert de Niro as Al Capone. The story follows U.S. Treasury agent Eliot Ness as he fights crime, typified in notorious mob boss Al Capone, in 1930s Chicago with his special, handpicked team of agents… the Untouchables. Sean Connery won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.

Mathilda, a twelve-year old New York girl, is living an undesirable life among her half-family. Her father stores drugs for two-faced cop Norman Stansfield. Only her little brother keeps Mathilda from breaking apart. One day, Stansfield and his team take cruel revenge on her father for stretching the drugs a little, thus killing the whole family. Only Mathilda, who was out shopping, survives by finding shelter in Léon’s apartment in the moment of highest need. Soon, she finds out about the strange neighbour’s unusual profession – killing – and desperately seeks his help in taking revenge for her little brother. Léon, who is completely unexperienced in fatherly tasks, and in friendships, does his best to keep Mathilda out of trouble – unsuccessfully. Now, the conflict between a killer, who slowly discovers his abilities to live, to feel, to love and a corrupt police officer, who does anything in his might to get rid of an eye witness, arises to unmeasurable proportions – all for the sake of a little twelve-year old girl, who has nearly nothing to lose.

Neil and Vincent are similar in many ways, including their troubled personal lives. At a crucial moment in his life, Neil disobeys the dictum taught to him long ago by his criminal mentor–’Never have anything in your life that you can’t walk out on in thirty seconds flat, if you spot the heat coming around the corner’–as he falls in love. Thus the stage is set for the suspenseful ending….

“Say hello to my lil’ friend” is one of the great quotes in cinema history, from one of the most copied gangster films of all-time: Brian De Palma’s Scarface. Written by Oliver Stone and starring Al Pacino as Miami crime lord Tony Montana, the film chronicles his rise to power amid the cocaine-obsessed Eighties. The film also helped to launch Michelle Pfeiffer into the limelight.

Montana is perhaps the hardest man ever portrayed onscreen, and his persona has led to frequent references in rap music. Breeding toys, clothing and more twenty years after its release, Scarface continues to inform popular culture.

City of God (2002)

Cidade de Deus (City of God) is a housing project built in the 1960’s that–in the early 80’s–became one of the most dangerous places in Rio de Janeiro. The tale tells the stories of many characters whose lives sometimes intersect. However, all is seen through the eyes of a singular narrator: Buscapé, a poor black youth too frail and scared to become an outlaw but also too smart to be content with underpaid, menial jobs. He grows up in a very violent environment. The odds are all against him. But Buscapé soon discovers that he can see reality differently than others. His redemption is that he’s been given an artist’s point of view as a keen-eyed photographer. As Buscapé is not the real protagonist of the film–only the narrator–he is not the one who makes the decisions that will determine the sequence of events. Nevertheless, not only his life is attached to what happens in the story, but it is also through Buscapé’s perspective of life that one can understand the complicated layers and humanity of a world, apparently condemned to endless violence.

Vincent Vega and Jules Winnfield are two hitmen on the hunt for a briefcase whose contents were stolen from their boss, Marsellus Wallace. They run into a few unexpected detours along the road. Marsellus is out of town, and he’s gotten Vincent to take care of his wife, Mia. That is, take her out for a night on the town. Things go smoothly until one of them makes a huge error. Butch Coolidge is a boxer who’s been approached by Marsellus and been told to throw his latest fight. When Butch ends up killing the other boxer, he must escape Marsellus. Pumpkin and Honey Bunny (not their real names) are two lovebirds/thieves who have decided to rob the restaurant they’re currently eating at. But the restaurant doesn’t turn out to be as easy as the other places they’ve robbed.

Featuring incredible performances from a very strong cast, innovative camerawork, and a tight script, GoodFellas showed the dichotomy of the mob just as effectively as the Godfather films without being derivative in any way.

Drug dealer Virgil Sollozzo is looking for Mafia Families to offer him protection in exchange for a profit of the drug money. He approaches Don Corleone about it, but, much against the advice of the Don’s lawyer Tom Hagen, the Don is morally against the use of drugs, and turns down the offer. This does not please Sollozzo, who has the Don shot down by some of his hit men. The Don barely survives, which leads his son Michael to begin a violent mob war against Sollozzo and tears the Corleone family apart.

Forrest Gump (1994)

The story follows the life of low I.Q. Forrest Gump and his meeting with the love of his life Jenny. The film chronicles his accidental experiences with some of the most important people and events in America from the late 1950’s through the 1970’s including a meeting with Elvis Presley, JFK, Lyndon Johnson, Richard Nixon, fighting in Vietnam, etc. The problem is, he’s too stupid to realize the significance of his actions. Forrest becomes representative of the baby boomer generation having walked through life blindly.

Nick Curran is in charge of the brutal murder of a rock star, who has been killed using an ice pick. All the evidence points to a beautiful woman, Catherine, as the main suspect of the crime. Catherine is a psychologist and she’s written one crime novel, a story in which a similar crime is described. Curran goes to Catherine’s house to interrogate her about the victim and what happened that night. Apparently, Catherine was a formal lover of the musician and she even spent that night with him, but she claims haven’t killed him. Nick feels attracted immediately to Catherine, but she’s a quite intelligent woman who manages to avoid his questions cleverly, using her physical attributes and seductive personality. Catherine has a romantic relationship with another woman, but that won’t be an obstacle for Nick, who everyday seems to be much more interested in her. But Nick’s been checked by a psychologist, Beth, who was his girlfriend in the past, because the detective had an alcohol problem. But the sexual attraction that Nick feels for Catherine, seems to provoke the problem reappears again. Nick becomes Catherine’s lover, fact that threatens to hindered the investigation and puts in danger his life, discovering a wild sexuality never experimented before. Nick’s convinced that Catherine is innocent, but maybe love and sex are blinding him in his way of unfolding the truth.

Lynch would go on to make other memorable mysteries, but this is the only one that ever quite served his own and his audience’s purposes so satisfactorily.

The now defunct HD-DVD Promotion Group had begun as a somewhat rebellious outgrowth of the earlier DVD Forum. The DVD Forum was an alliance of industry titans dedicated to the promotion of and advocacy for the DVD format. When the march of technological progress saw the growth of cliques around various competing standards or formats, a split ensued where member companies coalesced around new organizations dedicated to a specific format. The HD-DVD Promotion Group was one such result of that schism, in reaction to the earlier Blue-Ray Disc Association.

Blue-Ray Disc had been developed by Sony while continuing research into the laser technology behind the DVD. While virtually identical to a standard DVD today, at the time of their introduction Blue-Ray Discs needed to be housed in an expensive caddy, and they also required special players that would accept them. The DVD Forum eventually decided on a proposal endorsed by Warner Brothers and several other motion picture studios called DVD-9. But cliques managed to form around the various formats anyway, with Toshiba and NEC themselves promoting one of their own called Advanced Optical Disc, which is what came to be adopted by the DVD Forum as HD-DVD.

Attempts were made to avoid the kind of costly format war that Sony had engaged in with Panasonic during the late ’70s and early ’80s over Betamax versus VHS. Unfortunately, the Blue-Ray Disc Association and the DVD Forum’s negotiations at a compromise were not successful. Aside from the aforementioned matter of physical incompatibility, an additional stumbling block had been each side’s insistence on using different software platforms for interactivity, with the Blue-Ray Disc Association favoring the one based on Sun Microsystems’ Java language while HD-DVD advocates wanted Microsoft’s iHD (later renamed “HDi”).

As neither side was able to compromise enough and each side was comprised of important industry leaders, the stage for a costly format war was set.
