Our Pleasant Acquaintance With Nintendo Wii.

I’d like to drop just a few lines about this glorious Nintendo Wii. Its sudden appearance has become a real revolution in the sphere of virtual entertainment. So it’s high time to describe it. As for its design I can say that this console is relatively small. It’s almost invisible. But nevertheless gamers like this design in spite of the absence of colorful buttons typical for GameCube consoles. Now you can have an excellent opportunity to please your eyes by looking at its glossy surfaces which are able to “remember” fingerprints. The console is painted in the snow-white color and other colors aren’t available yet. There’s a curious sensor bar and a blue illuminated disc slot, which allows error-free insertion and removal Wii-drives even in the darkness.

Wii has 512 megabytes of internal flash memory, two USB 2.0 ports and integrated Wi-Fi connection. Wii also has a slot for flash cards, a standard SD enabling you to expand the internal memory. The processors for this console was designed with low power consumption during the game and the minimum in the “sleep” mode, so the console is not heated and it does not need an active cooling with a noisy fan.

The CPU: PowerPC “Broadway” was developed jointly together with IBM. It’s the technology of 90 nanometers. The graphics processor is “Hollywood”, jointly developed together with ATI. The technology is the same in this case too. I mean 90 nanometers. There are 4 ports for classic controllers Nintendo GameCube. There are also 2 slots for memory cards from Nintendo GameCube. You can also notice one SCART slot S-VHS outputs for connecting to TV.

There’s also a special stand for vertical mounting. Besides this you can obtain one wireless controller known as Wii Remote with two AA-batteries, one extra controller Wii Nunchuck, IR emitter Wii Sensor Bar with a stand, Wii AV Multi Out – 1M RCA Video + 2M RCA Audio and a game Wii Sports.

The main thing is that Nintendo has taken the risk to reshape a traditional interface between the player and the console quite significantly. A traditional gamepad has been sent to the past dustbin of history and its place has been occupied by the so-called Wiimote or in other words Wii Remote.

First of all Wii Remote is equipped with an accelerometer that allows measuring the applied force. Secondly, Wii Remote has got the infrared receiver enabling this control to determine its location in three dimension space. Each Wii Remote has got its own tiny speaker and the memory that stores a user profile. By the way this profile is known as “Mii”. You can pay a visit to your friend and play his Wii with your profile. I think you’ve had rather a pleasant acquaintance with Nintendo Wii.
