Basic Instinct (1992)
Nick Curran is in charge of the brutal murder of a rock star, who has been killed using an ice pick. All the evidence points to a beautiful woman, Catherine, as the main suspect of the crime. Catherine is a psychologist and she’s written one crime novel, a story in which a similar crime is described. Apparently, Catherine was a formal lover of the musician and she even spent that night with him, but she claims haven’t killed him. Nick feels attracted immediately to Catherine, but she’s a quite intelligent woman who manages to avoid his questions cleverly, using her physical attributes and seductive personality. Catherine has a romantic relationship with another woman, but that won’t be an obstacle for Nick, who everyday seems to be much more interested in her. But Nick’s been checked by a psychologist, Beth, who was his girlfriend in the past, because the detective had an alcohol problem. But the sexual attraction that Nick feels for Catherine, seems to provoke the problem reappears again. Nick becomes Catherine’s lover, fact that threatens to hindered the investigation and puts in danger his life, discovering a wild sexuality never experimented before. Nick’s convinced that Catherine is innocent, but maybe love and sex are blinding him in his way of unfolding the truth.

Blue Velvet (1986)
Prior to Blue Velvet, David Lynch made three ambitious and equally eccentric films – Eraserhead, The Elephant Man and Dune – but with the 1986 mystery, his legacy was permanently assured: this bizarre exploration of suburbia’s seedy underbelly became the template for almost every Lynch project which followed. Kyle Machlachlan, who later became the director’s squeaky-clean protagonist on Twin Peaks, plays Jeffrey, a nosy kid who discovers a severed ear in an abandoned lot and soon succumbs to a strange, frightening world of masochism and violence. Dennis Hopper, returning to sobriety after decades of drug use, offers a chilling performance as Frank Booth, while Isabella Rossellini lays bare her soul – and her body – as a kidnapped man’s wife, who finds herself unexpectedly excited by this dangerous, depraved underworld. Lynch would go on to make other memorable mysteries, but this is the only one that ever quite served his own and his audience’s purposes so satisfactorily.
8th Place
Touch of Evil (1958)
An automobile is blown up as it crosses the Mexican border into the United States. Mike Vargas, a high ranking Mexican narcotics official on honeymoon with his bride Susie is drawn into the investigation because a Mexican national has been accused of the crime. The figurative and physical presence of Hank Quinlan as the 330 pound sheriff looms all over. Quinlan is a fanatic where “justice” is concerned, even if obtaining it involves planting evidence. Quinlan’s reputation for law and order enables him to bend the law without question until Vargas confronts him. From that point on, it’s a battle of wits between the two that, with an accelerating pace, rushes to a climax.
7th Place
Memento (2000)
Point blank in the head a man shoots another. In flashbacks, each one earlier in time than what we’ve just seen, the two men’s pasts unfold. Leonard, as a result of a blow to the head during an assault on his wife, has no short-term memory. He’s looking for his wife’s killer, compensating for his disability by taking Polaroids, annotating them and tattooing important facts on his body. We meet the loquacious Teddy and the seductive Natalie (a barmaid who promises to help) and we glimpse Leonard’s wife through memories from before the assault. Leonard also talks about Sammy Jankis, a man he knew with a similar condition. Has Leonard found the killer? Who’s manipulating whom?
6th Place
The Sixth Sense (1999)
Child psychologist Malcom Crowe is one night visited by an ex-patient named Vincent, angry, enraged. He wounds Crowe, then kills himself. A few months later, Crowe is visited by a 9-year old boy named Cole. He sees dead people who do not know they are dead. Because of this, he is called a freak in school. 5th Place
Se7en (1995)
This thriller portrays the exploits of a deranged serial-killer. His twisted agenda involves choosing seven victims who represent egregious examples of transgressions of each of the Seven Deadly Sins. He then views himself as akin to the Sword of God, handing out horrific punishment to these sinners. Two cops, an experienced veteran of the streets who is about to retire and the ambitious young homicide detective hired to replace him, team up to capture the perpetrator of these gruesome killings. Unfortunately, they too become ensnared in his diabolical plan….[spin]
4th Place
Fight Club (1999)
[spin]The first rule of Fight Club is that it kicks ass. Adapted from Chuck Palahniuk’s amazing and unique novel, Fight Club follows the intertwining lives of two men as they turn the world on its ear. Eschewing society’s rules in favor of chaos, the two men (Brad Pitt and Edward Norton) begin a national network of “fight clubs” where men go to beat each other senseless in hopes of finding salvation and respite from their boring lives. Not only an indictment of consumer culture, but a wickedly dark and sinister film with constant thrills, Fight Club stands as a modern classic.
3th Place
Psycho (1060)
For Marion Crane, it’s been quite an eventful day. The day before, she had stolen $40,000 from her employer’s client, packed her bags and driven all day on her way to join her paramour several hundred miles away. Now, she is taking a relaxing hot shower after her long day’s journey. The remoteness of the motel suit her purposes perfectly. The only sounds heard are the chirping of the crickets, the splashing of the water, and her humming contentedly as the hot needles of water caress her aching shoulders.
2th Place
Silence of the Lambs (1991)
Anthony Hopkins’ pronunciation of the name “Clarice” in indelibly imprinted in my brain for the rest of time. As the maniacal Hannibal “The Cannibal” Lector, Hopkins took full ownership of the role originally portrayed by Brian Cox in Manhunter. Jodie Foster also fully affirmed her status as Hollywood’s smartest leading lady. Her performance was so solid that the FBI still uses the film as a poster-child for their promotion. Thrilling, scary and just exceptionally solid filmmaking in the hands of Jonathan Demme, Silence was a runway success both commercially and critically, taking home golden naked guys for Picture, Director, Actor, Actress and Screenplay.
1th Place
Taxi Driver (1976)
Travis Bickle is an ex-Marine and Vietnam War veteran living in New York City. He’s a loner who has strong opinions about what is right and wrong with mankind. For Travis, the one bright spot in New York humanity is Betsy, a worker on the presidential nomination campaign of Senator Charles Palatine. Travis becomes obsessed with Betsy. After an incident with Betsy, Travis believes he has to do whatever he needs to to make the world a better place in his opinion. One of his priorities is to be the savior for Iris, a twelve year old runaway and prostitute who he believes wants out of the profession and under the thumb of her pimp and lover Matthew.
